Teachers and Staff
Problem: Teachers need time for
professional development and to
work together on instruction.
The additional day in the teachers'
calendar for professional
development is a beginning. But they
need more time to plan lessons and
develop curriculum, on their own and
with other teachers.
We need a stronger commitment to
communication and collaboration.
To solve the problem, I will:
- Support the adoption of standards-based instructional materials when the state
adopts them so that professional development is provided in a timely manner, and
the cost is covered through state funding
- Work with the unions to structure the work week to provide additional professional
development and collaborative time
- Include parents in the discussion of how to structure time for collaborative work
- Focus on data and using data to guide instruction so that all students continue to
make progress toward district and state standards
- Re-evaluate decisions based on ongoing and new information
