Schools: Outside Funding
As an administrator and principal, I've helped my schools and the district cope with tight
budgets by looking for creative sources of outside funding. Not only did we raise money
-- we also helped the local community invest in our children's future.

Here are some examples:

  • California Healthy Start Grant to provide mental and physical health support
to children and their families and support to build a collaborative network of
community service providers to families attending the school

  • California After-School Grant, providing free after-school prevention of
academic difficulties, as well as intervention supports, and enrichment
classes to support fun and knowledge

  • Service Learning Grant, integrating social studies with public service and
    giving back to the community

  • Funding from S. Mark Taper Foundation of $90,000 to support the
collaborative work of the school family center

  • Funding from Daniel Freeman Hospital Foundation of $10,000 to support the
collaborative work of the school family center

  • Funding from Kaiser Hospital Foundation of $10,000 to $20,000 yearly to
support the collaborative work of the school family center

  • State of California Reading Excellence Award Grant (REA) for reading
support for 36 elementary schools. Awarded 36 out of 37 submitted
    grants ($200,000-$400,000 per school)

  • Developed programs to bring outside volunteers into the schools who bring
special and needed expertise and support to the schools
